Going to japan for about 24 days. JR options? 2018/8/25 08:47
I am going from 3/15-4/18 of next year. I will be in Osaka, Hiroshima, Kyoto, Nara and Tokyo. What kind of JR pass should I get? Any idea on pricing? Please help!

More information (e.g., day-by-day itinerary) is needed to respond to your question.

@Joho is right, it's not really easy to answer that question without knowing when you intend to do the major journeys. Pricing on Jr Passes is fairly standard so I suggest you google for them in your home country.

Osaka 3/25 -30 (5nights)

-Don't need a rail pass for this. Just get an ICOCA card to cover subway/bus around city. You can get a combo Harukua/ICOCA card at a discount to also cover transportation from KIX into Osaka.

Hiroshima 3/30-4/1 (2nights)

-I recommend Kansai Hiroshima Pass to cover this trip from Osaka to Hiroshima back to Kyoto. If you plan right, you can also use it for daytrips in the Osaka/Kyoto area. Good for 5 days. https://www.japan-guide.com/e/e2361_kansai_hiroshima.html

Kyoto 4/1-4/7 (6nights)

-no need for rail pass here. Again ICOCA card to ride subway and bus.

Tokyo 4/8-4/15 (8nights)

- Since you'll be there for 8 nights, a 7 day rail pass won't work. If you have an extra hour to spare, you can buy discount tickets for the slowest bullet train http://www.jrtours.co.jp/kodama/en/

For getting around Tokyo, you can again use your ICOCA on the subway. Should be able to refill at most SUICA machines.

Nara 4/15-17 (2 nights)

-No rail pass needed. Just pay fares. Pull out that ICOCA card again.

You have more than 24 days per detailed itinerary, so I'm guessing that you have not worked out the details, yet. That's OK - you still have lots of time to work it out. Generally speaking, if you are staying in one location for more than several days, a regional or country-wide pass does not pay for itself. You are better off buying local passes.
E.g.,
Kyoto - you can buy daily bus pass, or combination subway+bus pass for 1 or 2 days.
Nara - you can buy daily bus pass or there is a tourist "loop bus" that you can ride for 100 yen each time.
Tokyo - there are subway passes (24/48/72 hr) and you can buy two 72-hr passes if you are for 7~8 days.

Yes, that is the full itinerary. I said the wrong amount of days tho. But thatfs the schedule. Thank you so much. Ifm excited. Ifm sure to catch the cherry blossoms on one of the cities.. itfs the entire reason why I planned around that time. Anyway, I will not get a JR pass and just stick to local tickets. Thanks a ton! Please let me know if there is anything else I may need to know 😄😄😄

I would remove the Osaka days and add in northern kyushu.

No need for 5 days Osaka and 6 days Kyoto when they are 25 minutes apart.

Please note that you will hit the cherry blossom season. Of course you can see cherry blossoms, but at the same time the hotel rate will be very expensive in Kyoto and Osaka. Tokyo is a very big city so the hotel rate will not be affected largely, but in general Tokyo is always rather expensive. If you are looking for hostels, then there will be no problem, but if you are looking for normal hotels with in-room bath, you might better take care of it. Whether you are sole traveller or a group of more than two will affect the planning for the accommodations.

Re: your itinerary (1) 2018/8/26 22:19
JR-West Kansai-Hiroshima Area pass
(recommended by Me2)
can pay off for Osaka -- Hiroshima -- Kyoto.

This pass is good for 5 consecutive calendar days.
By shifting your Nara trip closer to your Hiroshima trip,
you can use this pass also for the ways to and back from Nara.

Possible small demerits in traveling with this JR-West pass
: You go without seat reservation
for the Shinkansen section between Shin-Osaka and Hiroshima.
: You go by the non-Shinkansen line between Shin-Osaka and Kyoto.

Shinkansen is not available at Osaka Station.

Osaka, Shin-Osaka and Kyoto Stations
are connected by JR Special Rapid trains.
It should be better to avoid weekday morning and evening rushes.

- Nara Kotsu: Bus passes

Then back to Osaka for a night To fly out.

Have you considered flying out from Tokyo Haneda [HND] or Narita [NRT]?

Depending on the location of your Osaka hotel,
you can easily travel from/to KIX mainly by Nankai lines.

Hiroshima 3/30-4/1 (2nights)

Do you plan to go also to Miyajima Island?
Then,
it sounds better to be there
on a day among the 4th to 7th of April (2019),
because the difference in the tide level is expected to be large,
with a high tide over 300 cm in the morning
and a low tide below 100 cm in the evening,
which would be good to watch Grand Torii Gate of Itsukushima Shrine.

You might hope to take a domestic flight at a discount price
from Hiroshima [HIJ] to Tokyo Haneda [HND].
https://www.japan-guide.com/e/e2364.html
In that case,
unless you add a trip,
the above-mentioned Kansai-Hiroshima Area pass
would not greatly save your cost
for your trips in this area and your train ride to Shiraichi Station.

Example of revised itinerary:
3/25
: Arrival in Kansai Airport [KIX].
Until 3/31: Kyoto (6 nights).
Until 4/ 2: Nara (2 nights).
Until 4/ 5: Osaka (3 nights).
4/ 5
: Leaving Osaka in the early morning.
: Traveling for Hiroshima.
Until 4/ 6: Miyajima (1 night).
Until 4/ 7: Hiroshima (1 night).
4/ 7
: Leaving Hiroshima in the early morning.
: Hiroshima Sta. --[JR Sanyo Line]-- Shiraichi Sta.;
currently the operation is suspended partially on the way,
which is expected to be resumed by September 2018.
: Shiraichi Sta. --[bus]-- Hiroshima Airport [HIJ].
http://www.hij.airport.jp/template/timetable_jr_bus_e.html
: Taking a flight to Tokyo Haneda [HND].
Until 4/15: Tokyo (8 nights).
4/15
: Heading back to Osaka, mainly by the Shinkansen.
Until 4/18: Osaka (3 nights).
4/18
: Departure from Kansai Airport [KIX].

Thanks omentonashi! That itinerary sounds wonderful.. I guess 1 night in Hiroshima is only needed since the other night will be in Miyajima! Also, Ifm willing to take away a few days from Tokyo or Osaka if there is some city or town that Ifm leaving out

Re: other destinations 2018/8/26 23:12
You plan not to hurry but assign more-than-enough time for each place;
therefore JR non-flexible passes
(i.e. JR passes to be valid for consecutive days)
may not pay off easily.

Now you don't have to care the validity term of a JR pass,
you may hope to add trips.

I suggest you return to Osaka not by airway but by railway
and make some side trips,
for example, to Ito, Atami and/or Hakone;
among places which you can visit in a one-day or two-day trip from Tokyo
are Nikko, Kusatsu (in Gunma) and Karuizawa.

Re: JR pass 2018/8/26 23:17
In a case where the cost for your added trips surpasses 10000 yen,
a 14-day Japan Rail Pass might pay off;
as for now, it sounds better to go without a JR pass.
