How can I use the 7 Day Japan Rail Pass? 2018/9/7 06:26
I would like to rephrase my original question.
We would like to visit the following cities on a JR 7 Day Pass starting from Tokyo:
Kyoto, Nara, Miyajima, Kanazawa, Shirakawago and Takayama
Can you suggest an itinerary that uses the JR 7 Day Pass efficiently for these cities?

7 day pass for 5 locations. Not really suitable.

Maybe a 14 day pass so you can have few days in Kyoto instead of only two.

I don't understand your response.
Tokyo - Takayama 16
Takayama - Kyoto 10
Nara day trip 2.5
Kyoto – Miyajima 11.5
Himeji - Tokyo. 20
Total: 60,000 yen $543
How is a 7 Day JR Pass not a good deal which costs $263?

well spending 4 hours at each location and missing out on most of it cos you are doing 5 locations in 6 days sounds like a waste of money. spend you 283 dollars and hotel money your way. it is your money. but if you are looking for a good deal, dont do what you are proposing.

Re: your itinerary and pass 2018/9/8 04:44
You are over-estimating your JR regular cost….

Shirakawa-go is not accessible with your Japan Rail Pass.
Bus fares on the route Kanazawa -- Shirakawa-go -- Takayama are not covered.

For how many days will you travel in Japan?
A 7-day Japan Rail Pass is valid for 7 consecutive days.
It sounds too tight
to start from Tokyo, tour all the listed places and return to Tokyo
within only 7 calendar days.
That is why hakata14 says it is not really suitable.

When you limit both the number of sites to visit and time for each site,
logically you can make a 7-day JRP pay off for this journey;
however,
personally I don’t call it a good deal,
and I cannot recommend it, as long as you hope to really enjoy your trips.

Make sure not to misjudge as if a Japan Rail Pass were most cost-saving
while you actually have a better option.
Also, please note that you pay a handling fee to the sales agency when you purchase your Exchange Order for JRP.

When will you travel?
It sounds better, if possible,
to visit Miyajima during a spring tide (i.e. when the tide level varies largely)
so that you can see the torii gate of Itukushima Shrine in different scenes.

omentenashi, these were the only fares that I was considering:
Tokyo - Takayama 16
Takayama - Kyoto 10
Nara day trip 2.5
Kyoto – Miyajima 11.5
Himeji - Tokyo. 20
These were the cities I would use the 7 Day Pass on but pay the fares as needed for our stay in Tokyo.

I think what the other posters want to tell you is that the 7 day JR pass is only valid for 7 CONSECUTIVE days.
If you plan to do all this travel within just 7 days then yes, the JR Pass is good value. BUT you will race around the country with barely any time at your locations.
It is your trip so do as you please, but if you have only 7 days to explore Japan it is better to limit yourself to 2-3 locations. If instead you have longer, eg 2 weeks , you could visit all the places you list, BUT you would need a 14 day JR pass.

If you let us know how many days in total and at each location we’ll be able to advise better.

Enjoy your trip to Japan!

Well the OP want to know how to deal with 6 locations within 7 days using Japan Rail Pass. Though previous posters (and honestly me also) think it's too rushed, there might be somewhat less rushed way of travel so I would like to try.

With this limited time of 7 consecutive days, your train travel should be when the touristic place is not open yet or closed already, i.e., in the early morning and after the sunset.

Day 1 Leave early morning from Tokyo to Kanazawa. There is no restriction of Japan Rail Pass using fastest Kagayaki. Explore Kanazawa.

Day 2 Bus to Shirakawago in the morning, explore and then bus to Takayama.

Day3 Explore Takayama. Take around 3 pm train (Wideview Hida) to Nagoya (or Maibara) and then Shinkansen Hikari to Kyoto.

Day4 Day trip to Nara from Kyoto. You may want to include some Kyoto sites such as Tofukuji and Arashiyama (sorry, I don't like Fushimiinari, but it might be good in the early morning or around the sunset).

Day5 Full day in Kyoto. Maybe Higashiyama district.

Day6 Early morning Hikari Shinkansen to Hiroshima and then local train and ferry to Miyajima. Explore Miyajima and then go back to Hiroshima to stay.

Day7 Early morning Shinkansen (Kodama or Hikari) to Himeji. You will arrive around 9 am. Explore Himeji and take 16:02 direct Hikari to Tokyo (19:40).
