Wondering where would be good places for day trips based at Kyoto other than Kyoto Osaka and Nara? Preferably we don't need to spend too much on train fares. We've 3 days extra due to a flight reschedule. There are 3 of us. Would like to see Japanese sights and culture. Thank you.

Obviously this depends on your interests. Places that come to my mind are:

Uji
Kobe
Himeiji (a bit farer afield)
Hikone
Horyuji temple area in Nara
Imaicho
Asuka
Hasedera
(The last 4 are all in Nara Prefecture)
More things in Kyoto (eg I also got gstuckh in Japan for a few more days due to typhoon 21) and went to Arashiyama, matsutaisha, susumushi temple ... today and will finish the day in an onsen in Arashiyama)
Nagoya (eg railway museum although I heard that there is a good one Kyoto as well)
Minoo Park in Osaka

You can easily spend another 2-3 weeks in Kansai without me bing too far from Kyoto.

Enjoy the KIX closure and your additional time in Japan!

Hikone. Original castle, nice garden, good castle museum, views of lake Biwa, Ryotanji. Close to Kyoto & not on the busiest tourist trail.
