Hokkaido visit by bus / train 2018/10/4 02:42
Hello!

Flying into Sapporo with my girlfriend on October 22 and leaving out of Sapporo the morning of the 29th. Looking to spend a couple nights in the city, and then the rest outside. We will not have a car.

Interested in onsen, autumn foliage, other natural seclusion (something remote but still accessible by bus or train), anything out of the ordinary!

Looking at Bibai, Furano, Lake Toya, and Otaru at the moment. But open to any and all suggestions!

Thank you!

Biei and Furano are popular destinations in summer and although countryside scenery is beautiful especially in Biei it may be better to save it for a future trip during the flower season.

Otaru is considered a must for any first visit to Hokkaido and it is easily done as a day trip from Sapporo without having had to spend a night there. Toya-ko is a good choice with beautiful lake scenery and a relaxing onsen experience in one the lakeside hotels. Also you can enjoy its evening fireworks before the end of Oct.

Another popular onsen destination is Noboribetsu and autumn is a very good time for a visit. Koyo can be enjoyed on the mt slopes near Oyunuma and Oku no Yu.

Jozankei with Houheikyou Dam is another good autumn foliage destination starting mid Oct. Although the dam takes longer to access it is still possible with public transportation with bus and shuttle connection.

Best to go with a car but hate not to mention is Niseko. Autumn colour is beautiful there around the Panorama Line and Shinsen-numa.

It is also good to go down to Hakodate for a couple of days. Easily done as a side trip from Hakodate by train is Onuma Quasi National Park which is another popular koyo site during late Oct.

Staying in Sapporo during late Oct donft miss a visit to the Hokkaido University for another type of autumn colour.
