Tokyo-Osaka-Kyoto 2018/11/1 16:23
Planning to go Tokyo-Osaka-Kyoto-Tokyo this December for 11 days. Is a 7 days JR pass worth buying it?

Depends on what you do while in Tokyo and Kansai region.

Reserved seats Tokyo to Kansai are around 14,000 yen. Slightly cheaper (13,500-ish) for non-reserved seats. And you can get tickets as cheaper as 10,100 yen using platt kodama.

Seven day JR pass is 29,XXX yen. So you need to use it more than just the shinkansen trips to make it pay off. And you'll still need to pay for transport on the 4 days you pass is not valid.

And you cannot use the JR pass for buses and subways and trams in Kansai region. So you need to pay more using an IC card to cover these costs while in Kansai. Should cost you about 1000 yen on average per day.

I personally would use the platt kodama tickets, (use google to find), and then just an IC card around Kyoto/Osaka. So 2x 10,100 shinkansen tickets and 11x 1000 IC card days, total 31,000-ish. 1500 yen more than seven day pass.

Unless your are very sure what your details plan are and hence can calculate to the yens else for me I would just grab the JR pass for ease of mind but that is individual.

A 7-day Japan Rail Pass is unlikely to save greatly your cost,
unless you visit many places scattered in Tokyo
or you add a trip which is made (mainly) by JR
(to Hiroshima + Miyajima for example).

To get an Exchange Order for a 7-day Japan Rail Pass,
you pay not only 29110 yen on the pass but also a handling fee,
both in your currency.

Gate machines do not process Japan Rail Passes;
you have to show your pass at a manned gate
every time you enter or exit the JR railway network.

Some major sightseeing spots
are not accessible by JR or can be better accessed by a non-JR line.

this December for 11 days.

When in December will you travel?

Until the 27th,
you probably can secure your seats even without reservation
in Tokaido Shinkansen trains.

JTB now offers to foreign visitors some packages
of a Shinkansen discount coupon
for your round-trip rides without seat reservation
from Tokyo to Kyoto | Shin-Osaka
+ a one-day Kyoto | Osaka traveling pass.

: Osaka version

If you get back to Tokyo during the year-end days from the 28th,
it may be better to reserve your seats in a Shinkansen train.

[JR regular cost for the major legs]

When you go also to Nara,
a round-trip discount (10 percent) is applied to the JR basic fares
to travel from Tokyo and back.

27660 to 28460 yen
: 17280 yen as the JR basic fares
to travel from Tokyo (Ward Area) via Kyoto, Shin-Osaka and Osaka
to Nara and back to Tokyo within 10 calendar days.
: 5190 to 5590 yen as the Shinkansen Hikari surcharge
for your ride from Tokyo or Shinagawa to Shin-Osaka
with your seat reserved.
: 5190 to 5590 yen as the Shinkansen Hikari surcharge
for your ride from Kyoto to Shinagawa or Tokyo
with your seat reserved.

For your Shinkansen train ride,
you can pay 310 yen more and take a Nozomi train,
which Japan Rail Pass travelers are not allowed to choose.

We will reach Tokyo in early December. Am I right if I slot in to visit Okayama (1 day) while in Osaka, to make the JR pass more worthwhile?

Re: Tokyo - Osaka - Okayama - Kyoto - Tokyo 2018/11/2 15:59
We will reach Tokyo in early December.
if I slot in to visit Okayama (1 day) while in Osaka

Well, in that case, a combination of
the JTB Kyoto package
(21000 yen: Shinkansen coupon + Kyoto Subway & Bus One-day Pass)
and the JR-West Kansai WIDE Area Pass
(5-day; 9000 yen when booked through the official website)
sounds suitable for the revised itinerary.
(The both are for your train rides without seat reservation.)

- JR-West Kansai WIDE Area Pass
https://www.westjr.co.jp/global/en/ticket/pass/kansai_wide/
- Kyoto Subway & Bus day passes
https://www2.city.kyoto.lg.jp/kotsu/webguide/en/ticket/regular_1day_ca...

One possible demerit is
that you get off your Shinkansen train at Kyoto then take a non-Shinkansen train for Osaka.
(You change trains anyway
unless Shin-Osaka Station is close to your first destination in Osaka City.)

To travel between Kyoto and Shin-Osaka Stations,
a JR-West pass can be used only on the non-Shinkansen route.
(The Shinkansen section Kyoto -- Shin-Osaka is operated by JR Central.)

In Kyoto Station,
there are Shinkansen East and Central Transfer Gates
between the Shinkansen zone and the non-Shinkansen zone.
