18-man (180000) pretax means roughly 15-man take home. Thatfs going to be very very tough for two people. I wonft say itfs impossible, because sometimes you can find dirt cheap rentals in rundown neighborhood.

After tax only be be just enogh for one person.

While Tokyo rents and fruit and veg is expensive. Everything else being cheaper than other 1st world modernized countries offsets these small issues.

Re: is it enough to live in tokyo? 2019/4/4 11:12
it is enough if you decide and are ok with living frugal.
by frugal i mean living in a confined space, sharing one single room with your partner, all the time, with no privacy for any of you, as well as living outside of central areas and having a long commute (+1h).
limit yourself to basics: cook at home with local and seasonal ingredients. buy only those things that you really need. forget about dining out or doing much shopping. You'll probably not be able to save much, if at all. Then, if you have discipline and manage your money correctly, you can survive. Many japanese people live like this. The difference is that for them these conditions are normal and don't complain about them. For foreigners, tokyo is a novelty and they want to have the money to enjoy it and make a good experience out of it, therefore from their point of view your salary will never be enough. But in the end, it's up to you to decide whether living in tokyo is worth all the lifestyle limitations that you'd definitely have.
