Time to pick up JR Pass Kansai Airport?

Our flight arrives in Terminal 1 at Kansai Airport at 7pm on 27 April. We hope to be on the 8.46pm train to reach our accommodation in Osaka before check-in closes at 10pm.

We will be using a JR Kansai-Hiroshima Area Pass for travel to Mihara later in the week, and would like to use it for the train from the airport if we can.

Do you think we will have enough time to clear immigration and pick up our passes so we can catch the 8.46pm train?

With a little bit of luck you should be able to do it, but if multiple airlines arrive at the same time, immigration and baggage can slow down, and if there are brain dead tourists in front of you exchanging vouchers for passes you could run out of time. The JR ticketing window (Midori no Madoguchi) and T1 immigration exit are close, so your time will be lost standing in the lines.

First, you need to see if it is worth it to use 1 day of your pass to travel from KIX to your hotel. I'm sure you are aware already of how the 5 calendar days count.

If you are unsure whether you can make it on time for check-in, you can always try to inform your hotel for a possible late check-in, most hotels accept it.
