Narita - Tokyo/Nippori Seats 2019/7/8 21:22
Hi guys,

From this website:
https://www.japan-guide.com/e/e2027.html

I learnt that if travelling by "JR Sobu Line" or "Keisei Limited Express", seat reservation is not possible.
But does anyone has any experience taking these? Do they get really crowded during certain time of the day? Is it still possible to find seats?

My travel info:
From Narita to Tokyo/Nippori on 16th Oct (Wednesday) ~16:00;
From Tokyo/Nippori to Narita on 23rd Oct (Wednesday) ~14:00

Thank you in advance for your help!

Re: Narita Airport - Tokyo/Nippori Seats 2019/7/9 14:52
At which NRT terminal(s) are your flights scheduled?
Where in Tokyo will you stay?

JR Rapid and Narita Express [N'EX] both go
mainly by the Sobu Line until Tokyo,
also partly by the Narita Line
(Narita Airport Station -- Airport Terminal 2 Station --
Narita Station (outside the airport) --
Sakura Station (skipped by N'EX)).

Compared to Narita Express trains,
Rapid trains depart much less frequently,
and they go slower, making stops also at stations skipped by N'EX.
Avoiding Narita Express trains,
you may have to wait long for a Rapid train and get to Tokyo late.

That is only for particular cases.

The JR | Keisei station in NRT Terminal 2
is not the first but the second station for trains leaving the airport.

Some JR Rapid trains running for NRT
start as Local trains from Kurihama Station or Zushi Station on the Yokosuka Line.
Keisei trains running via Nippori for NRT
start from (Keisei) Ueno Station.

Will you take trains solely?

Those two days are normal weekdays.
You can avoid morning and evening commuters' rushes.

It may be difficult for some group passengers to secure adjacent seats,
but I suppose that trains in your direction do not very easily get packed during your time zone.

No, you can book SkyLiner(direct train) of Keisei.

JR train can not go without transfer, and it takes time by roundabout.

Thank you all for the answers!

Actually I wanted to take JR Sobu Line or Keisei Limited Express because they are cheaper than Narita Express and Keisei Skyliner. Seems like the general consensus is that I can still find empty seats since the timing I have is non-peak, just that the empty seats may be scattered.
We will probably stay in Ueno/Nippori area, since Tokyo lodging is expected to be more expensive as well (really tight on budget here...)

Thanks again and have a nice day.

Local train on the JR Sobu Line is not much slower than the N'Ex and is a lot cheaper than the N'Ex or Skyliner. Getting a seat and managing luggage is very easy when departing Narita Airport. Heading to Narita it is more crowded in the central Tokyo area, but people progressively get off and usually by Chiba there is lots of space/seating.
I often get this service to/from Narita.

Compared to Narita Express trains, rapid trains depart much less frequently,
For some parts of the day they run hourly. For the arrival time (late afternoon/evening) two per hour, the same as the N'Ex.
