Hello,
I'm looking to take a shinkansen ticket for my next holidays in Japan. I wonder to know, if we buy a unreserved seat ticket from Tokyo to Shin-Osaka, is it for a specific train or can you we take any train with unreserved seat car ?
Thank you for your answers.

It is for a specific day, so you can take any train on that day.

The huge advantage of non-reserved tickets is it applies to any train for the specific day. For something like Tokyo to Shin-Osaka just turn up and jump on the next train - and with up to 10 trains per hour you never have to wait long.

To use the Shinkansen, you buy also a JR basic fare ticket which covers the Shinkansen section and corresponds to your itinerary. e.g. Tokyo Ward Zone -- Osaka City Zone: Good for 4 calendar days. Tokyo Ward Zone -- Okayama: Good for 5 calendar days.
Validity of your Shinkansen non-reserved seat ticket: Validity period : One calendar day. Section and direction : From Tokyo | Shinagawa to Shin-Osaka. Seat : Not reserved. Class : Ordinary. Train category (Nozomi, Hikari or Kodama) : Not specified. Train(s) : Not specified.
