Ehime to Kii Tanabe by public transport

How do I go from Jr Matsuyama Ehime to Kii Tanabe in Wakayama

That's quite a journey, over 7 hours by train. I wouldn't want to do it in one go if I could avoid it. The below is a hyperdia search using Mondays date.

If you want to go by Hyperdia, the best route is flying from Matsuyama to Itami and then taking public transit to Shin-Osaka to catch a JR Limited Express Kuroshio to Kii-Tanabe.

If you want to do trains the whole way, you need to catch a Limited Express from Matsuyama to Okayama and then take the shinkansen from Okayama to Shin-Osaka and then still take a Kuroshio to Kii Tanabe, the whole route is going to take you over 7 hours if you can't use Nozomi and over 6 hours if you can.

If you want to go the "scenic" route you can spend over 4 hours getting to Tokushima, then walk or or see if there is a bus to the Nankai Ferry Terminal, then take the ferry across to Wakayama then take a train from Wakayamako to Wakayama and finally catch a Kuroshio from Wakayama to Kii-Tanabe. This is the slowest route and could have some long layovers in Tokushima and Wakayama.

Geologically, there are four surface routes, excluding air.

1. The route going through Shimanami Kaido. There is a bus from Matsuyama to Fukuyama. You can catch a JR Shinkansen train there.

2. The Okayama route is the JR one described above.

3. Another is the one through Awajishima Island. There is a bus from Matsuyama to Kobe. You can use any transport to Osaka to get on the JR express train to the Kii Peninsula. The time gain by Shinkansen from Kobe to Osaka is negligible.

4. The sea route from Tokushima to Wakayama explained above.

The two bus routes above are seen on Google Maps.

Peach Aviation flies only once a day but if you can use it, it would be the fastest and cheapest way.

Though Hyperdia assumes it costs more than 15000 yen, but I think you can find much cheaper fare on Peach's website.
