JR East Pass (Tohoku Area)

Hi, I have purchased the JR East Pass(Tohoku Area) for my coming trip next month.
I have some queries and hope to get it clear before my departure.
The JR East Pass allow me to travel 5days within 14 days in Japan. Does this 5 days services on Shinkansen and trains only.
If I travelled on 18Dec from Narita T2 to Ueno(Day 1)
19Dec Ueno to Kokunodate, Kokunodate to Akita, same day 2 shinkansen rides(Day2)
21Dec Akita to Hirosaki(Day 3)
22Dec Hirosaki to Aomori(Day 4)
25DEc Aomori to Ueno(Day 5)
Could I still take the JR buses in Akita or Aomori during my visit to these two beautiful places?
