Travel from Kyoto to Takayama to Tokyo

What is the best way to travel from Kyoto to Takayama April 15th and then further on from Takayama to Tokyo on April 17th. 3 persons travelling with luggage on a two week Japan trip.
If answer is by rail, please specify stations and lines involved, and what sort of rail pass is best suited (these two trips will be the only rail travels on this tour).

Travel by any means on that date will be very busy because of the festival. You should be booking your tickets as soon as they go on sale. Many visitors would travel by train (PP gave link) - there are bus services too.
