Permission to work parttime on a work visa 2020/7/17 07:01
I thought I would try asking here since no one I know personally has any experience in the situation.

I currently have a Specialist in humanities working visa, and have done a few different jobs under it that have all been within the fields it covers.

Ifm looking into getting a part time job later this year that would fall outside of that. Specifically it would be at a cafe.

I heard some talk that things like grestaurant workh are not allowed, even if you apply for the gpermission to engage in other activitiesh permit.

Does anyone have experience gaining permission for such kind of work?

It depends on what kind of work you're going to do. If you change your job and the kind of work you're doing, you have to notify immigration or depending on where you live, the local city hall to let them know.

It all depends on the company and government if they allow you to do that kind of work, though I don't see why not if you already have a visa right now and work permission. People change jobs all the time in Japan and most of the time it's not so much of an issue once you're already here, but just need to check with the city hall or employer. They would have a better answer.

Thank you for your answer!

My main job wouldnft be changing and is in the field specified by my visa. Just I wanted to add a part time job outside of that field.

Actually, I tried to call immigration today and the man who answered was quite rude, saying gwhy would you work at a cafe when youfre not here to do thath. And said I couldnft, however when I asked about obtaining the permission permit for part time work he didnft really clarify what type of work is ok or not.

Guess I will have to ask the company I want to work part time for.0

I donft have any experience, but as far as I know (not a lawyer here though), with your situation, namely you being on Specialist in Humanities resident status, you cannot engage in gsimple laborh jobs (as defined by Immigration authorities).

Working as a cashier at a convenience store seems to be considered gsimple labor,h so I would guess waiter/waitress would also be considered as such.

Those who can engage in gsimple laborh include those on Student (within the max number of hours) or Dependent status, with that permission to engage in activities other than designated activities. (Those with Spouse of Japanese National, or Permanent Residence status, with no work restriction too.)
