Leaving Japan then returning 2021/10/18 15:11
Hello

Asking for a friend (UK national currently living in Japan) who is looking to return to the UK for personal reasons.

He has a specialist in humanities visa (valid until early next year) and is looking to return to the Uk for a month or so. He has yet to be vaccinated and will most likely not be before travel. So obviously will need to quarantine on arrival in the UK.

But what I am asking here, is will he be-able to return to Japan?

I have had a quick look online but couldnft seem to work it all out with all the different visas etc.

From what I gather he might have to quarantine for 14 days if he is allowed back in? But on one website it stated something along the lines that if you stay in a country for over 14 days you might not be able to re enter. Ifm very confused!
Can someone please help! Obviously I assume this would all be a lot easier if he was vaccinated but alas he isnft yet.

Also what are the chances of the rules changing while he is out of the country?

Also I gather if he can return that he might have to rent a phone at the airport so he can be contacted. Currently he only uses a data SIM card so doesnft have an actual phone number. Does anyone know how much this will cost?

Any help will be much appreciated.

Thank you

Ben

Would it not be a better idea to contact the immigration ministry directly?

My understanding is that all residents of Japan can re-enter Japan, and that the vaccinated will have to quarantine for 10 days while the non-vaccinated will have to quarantine for 14 days. I believe that people from most countries can do their quarantine at home, but if you arrive from one of selected countries, you have to spend your first three days at a designated quarantine location, and that the UK is currently one among those selected countries.

Cheapest would be to get an 050 number - say from Skype. I had those in different countries before and the one I had for Japan for a project cost me something like 2000 yen for a year (never used it, but it wasn't expensive).
Alternatively, get a cheap phone plan - my cell phone costs me 999 yen/month.
