Chitose Airport to Hakodate 2022/10/24 12:22
I will be in Hokkaido for 11 days from 30/4/2023 to 10/5/2023, we are 4 adults, intend to self-drive all through the trip. I will be arriving in Chitose Airpot at 10:35am after a long overnight flight, should I straight away sell drive to Hakodate or is there any other suggestions so that it will not be too tiring?
I welcome any suggestions on the road trip itinerary. Would like to cover Hakodate, Noboribetsu, Lake Toya, Otaru, Sapporo, Furano, Biei, Takachi, Lake Mashu, Asahiyama, Lake Akan.
Thank you in advance.

There are a lot of Japanese tourists during Golden Week, so is it okay if you don't change your plans?

Hokkaido is very large.
According to Google Maps, it takes nearly four hours by car.
It would be nice if you could sleep soundly on the plane, but if you can't, you might fall asleep on the way.
Therefore, you should go to a nearby place (such as Noboribetsu or Sapporo) on the first day.
Alternatively, it might be a good idea to travel to Hakodate by train on the first day and rent a car in Hakodate.
It seems that Toyota Rent a Car can be returned at other sales offices in Hokkaido.

So, are you staying in Hakodate for your first night? It's a 3.5 hour drive from the airport, and in Japan, you are advised not to drive when you are tired, because you tend to lose focus.

As suggested, you can rent a car at one spot and return it at another. But if you insist on starting to drive at the airport upon arrival, then how about spending your first night at Sapporo? It's only a 50 minute drive to the city (or 28 minutes by train). I hope you can take turns driving.

Last time I was a Chitose airport there is a hotel with onsen inside and I think you can even just get a room there for some hours to sleep. But yeah, driving after a long and tiring flight is never a good idea.

Alternatively you could start your trip in Sapporo and just get the train to Sapporo. And then rent a car there a few days later once you are done with your Sapporo sightseeing.

@ VC6345

It is not a bad idea to stay one night in Noboribetsu to unwind and enjoy the onsens upon arrival. Some hotels provide free pick up ( or with nominal fees ) from Chitose Airport, and may even have an option for you to take the hotel bus to Sapporo the next day.

I think Plan A is good.
Day11 (2023/05/10): Tokachigawa - New Chitose Airport is a long distance.
There is a possibility of accidents and traffic jams during the drive, so it is better to have plenty of time.

By the way, why is Otaru on Day5 and Day10 in Plan A?
I don't think Otaru from Day5 is necessary.
Plan B feels like too many Akan and Furano days.

Plan A sounds crazy hectic to me. Distances are far in Hokkaido and driving slow.
