Activities/places to visit with young kids 2022/11/1 16:32
Hey guys,

We are traveling to Japan in mid January to early February to see my husbands side of family who lives in Osaka. We have two kids aged 6 & 4.

Can you suggest any kids friendly activities/places to visit. They have never seen snow before so we are also wanting to travel somewhere outside of osaka (max 3hr travel) to see snow. Ifll be also 5 months pregnant then so we prefer not to travel anywhere too far.

I appreciate any suggestions.

In Osaka itself, there is the Kaiyukan [Osaka Aquarium] which houses a large array of different species of marine life. From penguins to seals and with the center piece being a large tank that houses a couple of whale sharks! [https://www.japan-guide.com/e/e4004.html] I highly recommend visiting this aquarium!

Then for theme parks, you've got;
- Universal Studios Japan https://www.japan-guide.com/e/e4021.html.
- The Legoland Discovery Center Osaka https://www.legolanddiscoverycenter.com/osaka/en/

Museums, there is the Osaka Museum of History [https://www.japan-guide.com/e/e4014.html] and also the Osaka Science Museum [https://www.japan-guide.com/e/e4015.html]

If your children like Pokemon, then there is also the Pokemon Center DX and cafe that is between Dotonbori and Shinsaibashi [https://www.pokemoncenter-online.com/cafe/en/?id=access]
Advance reservation is required for the Pokemon Cafe.
And there is also a 2nd (and smaller) Pokemon Center located at Osaka Station in Umeda.

Further afield from Osaka, in Kyoto.
There is the Iwatayama Monkey Park that can be found in the Arashiyama area of Kyoto.
Kyoto also has;
- Kyoto Railway Museum [https://www.japan-guide.com/e/e3972.html]
- Kyoto Manga Museum [https://www.japan-guide.com/e/e3946.html]
- Sagano Railway [https://www.japan-guide.com/e/e3965.html] *This is in Arashiyama.
- Kyoto City Zoo [https://www5.city.kyoto.jp/zoo/lang/en/] *2nd oldest zoo in Japan.
- Kyoto Pokemon Center

As for the snow... There is a small chance of snowfall in Kyoto and the surrounding areas during your visit to Japan.
However, it isn't guaranteed. But if there is snowfall during your time here, then I would certainly recommend visiting Kyoto's shrines and temples during this time (especially Kinkakuji, Kiyomizudera, Arashiyama area)
The best place nearby, for most likely seeing snow, would be Koyasan [https://www.japan-guide.com/e/e4900.html]. However, the conditions (snowy paths) could be risky for both your children and yourself, and I would advise extreme caution.

As suggested, you need to keep in mind that snowy condition itself is not the best thing for a pregnant person. That said, the go-to place for snow from Osaka would be anywhere on the Sea of Japan side. Perhaps, once you get to know the people you're visiting, your husband can take the children along with his Japanese family, while you take it easy with the remaining family in Osaka.

The closest ski resort is Mt. Rokko, but it's basically like artificial snow.
https://www.rokkosan.com/ski/
Ski resorts around Kansai
https://www.orion-tour.co.jp/ski/navi/articles/gelande/1086
Among them, Meiho Ski Resort has many courses for beginners and also Shaun the Sheep Snow Land, so it looks good.

In Osaka, Expo'70 Commemorative Park is recommended.
I especially like the National Museum of Ethnology.

There is also LaLaport.

Among them is Nifrel.

Kaiyukan is also good.

Thank you guys for these great suggestions. We are definitely going to include some of the places in our plan.

Also, about the snow. I grew up in Finland so I am very familiar with snow and ice and Ifll be preparing as much as I can and be as careful as I can. Thanks for your concern:)

I forgot to mention that Kids Plaza Osaka is also good.

In relation to Finland, Saitama has Tove Jansson Akebono Children's Forest Park and Moominvalley Park.

It seems that the management will change this time, but there is also a Moomin cafe in Tokyo.

They also have Robert's coffee (I had one at the Helsinki airport).

By the way, last month, I bought and ate Finnish bread at Kinokuniya.
I once bought Karelian pilacca at the main store in Tokyo. They probably still sell them.
