Recommendation for Dec.30-Jan.2 Kyoto-Tokyo

Hi, wefll be visiting Japan Dec.26-Jan.6. Arriving KIX and depart HND. We plan to spend ~4 days each in Kyoto and Tokyo visiting family/friends. That leaves 3-4 days (Dec.30-Jan.2) to program. We had visited Japan in 2017 with similar itinerary and visited (pre)Ghibli Park in Aichi and Izu Peninsula in between Kyoto and Tokyo. Plan A for this trip is to visit Kanazawa Dec. 30-31 (+ day trip to Shirakawago Jan.1) and Shinkansen to Tokyo on Jan.2. Given the New Year Holiday closures, however, should we just spend 1-2 days in Kanazawa and more time in Kyoto/Tokyo (e.g. day trip to Mt. Fuji)? Welcome your advice.
