Tokhoku to Hokkaido Travel Itinerary 2022/12/13 02:19
We are having to make a last-minute change to our itinerary, and are now hoping to take the shinkansen from Tokyo to Sapporo.

We have 2 nights (Dec 27th-29th) before we get to Sapporo and are looking into staying in Sendai, Aomori, or Akita prefecture. Which of these places is worth a stop? We like Japanese culture, history, and nature/wildlife.

TIA!

Of the 3 places mentioned, Aomori is my favorite by far.
Aomori Warasse Museum is the place to see the most impressive floats paraded in Nebuta Festival.
Most unique and artistic floats!

I've only been to Sendai and Aomori, but I like Aomori better.
I especially like the Sannai Maruyama ruins.
When I went to the Sannai-Maruyama site in early January, it was covered with a lot of snow.

It will be closed from December 30th, so you can see it on that day.
The Aomori Museum of Art across the street is closed from December 26th, so you can't see it.
I have never been to Wallasse.
Warasse will be closed from December 31st, so you can see it.

I also like Nokke-don from Aomori Gyosai Center.
Last year it was open until December 31st, so you'll probably be able to go.

I've never been there, but Hakkoda is good for skiing and the scenery looks nice.
Snow monsters are in season from January to February, so you may not be able to see them.

That's great to know! I think I will definitely be adding a stop in Aomori. We might add a couple of nights in Lake Towada as well. Thank you for all your recommendations, can't wait!

I also recommend Aomori City & Hirosaki. Hirosaki Castle and the Fujita Memorial Garden were wonderful.

If you can, go to Geibikei on the way up. It is such a beautiful and nice place.
