The schedule for the spring open house has not been announced, yet.
Check their web site for updates.
I visited during the autumn open house about 3 months ago.
It was very expensive at 2000.

The Japanese website has been recently updated with the information about the spring opening, but the English version hasn't yet. If google translator is to be trusted, the temple will be open from Apr 15 to May 31, and there is no option to reserve the tickets in advance.

I've visited in late spring - it was jammed with visitors; though virtually all were locals.

I imagine in autumn it is even worse.
But if you've given up on it, there are still loads of nice places. I suggest you go up to Ohara and see several places there, like Sanzenin.

There are several up there that are very charming, and not overrun like so many others in Kyoto. But I recommend you go there in the morning - you need to go by bus, and if you go in mid-afternoon like I did, there may be a bunch of old-timers heading home, and stopping at every single bus stop along the way. It took twice as long to get there than I planned.
If you want to go see Kibune & Kurama though, that is not a bad idea either. Or, there is the Shugakuin Imperial Villa

as well as some others nearby, like Rengeji, Enkoji, Shisendo, and Tanuki Fudoin.
