Purchasing JR Rail pass from official site 2023/6/12 10:14
I am thinking of buying the JR Rail pass from the official site so I can book my seats through the portal. Does anyone how the purchase process works? E.G. do they send a voucher to you ? Or do you bring a paper receipt to the window to collect? Many thanks!

If you buy the pass through an agency, they send a voucher to you, but not if you buy it directly through JR online. You'll get a number, which is your e-voucher - you take that and your passport to a JR exchange office.
You did not say when you are going to Japan. If you have to pay their wildly higher prices from this October, it is very unlikely a pass would pay off.

I am going to Japan in October. Still can't seem to figure out when the price increase with take affect. E.g. I created an account on the official site (I have created an account on https://www.japanrailpass-reservation.net/) Looks like you can only buy one month in advance and you need to specify when you want the pass activated at purchase. I haven't been able to figure out if I wait until early September to purchase the ticket if I will pay current price or the new price. Anyone know that? It might be safer to buy the pass via a broker in July if I can't figure out what they are going to do on the official site.

I have done the math and it seems for me it will still be worth while to buy a pass as I am traveling some long distances and also have many train rides.

I see no reason to buy directly through the JR website for the pass. It is about 15% cheaper to get it from some agency. It is very unlikely JR will turn away your voucher unless you cough up more money in October (they have not given an exact date yet). October is not at all a busy month so you should have no problems waiting til you're in Japan to make seat reservations, if you really need them at all. Last trip I found the cheapest pass prices on Klook, but there is no shortage of places that can sell rail passes.
