First time going to Japan and staying close to Ueno station. is this where I can ride the Shinkansen bullet train going to Osaka? Also coming back to Tokyo, does the same train have a station close to Narita Airport?

I think you have to go to Tokyo station first and get on the shinkansen to Osaka there. Ueno however is a stop for the line out to Nagano.
Ueno is handy for the airport as you can take the skytrain which is a lot faster and cheaper than the Narita Express.

- You need to take a JR train from Ueno to Tokyo station, then from Tokyo station you can take the JR Shinkansen train to Osaka (the specific station name is Shin-Osaka).
- Are you arriving in Narita? If so, and when you travel into Ueno, where your hotel is, you can take Keisei Railwayfs Keisei Skyliner train, direct from Narita Airport to Keisei Ueno station.
- When you return from Shin-Osaka to Tokyo, you can take the JR Narita Express train to Narita Airport. (Completely different trains. In the first place, Narita Airport is way far from Central Tokyo, meaning Ueno and Tokyo stations.)
