14-day Pass good if using 19-day itinerary? 2023/10/16 00:01
I am considering the 19-day itinerary, reaching Nagasaki, as I don't have to worry about doing the Tokyo related visit, as will be based here for some time, so can take Tokyo easy.

https://www.japan-guide.com/e/e2400_tokyo_17.html

I used the calculator, putting that itinerary in, and suggested it makes sense for 14-days and a close one for 21-days.

I am asking because the itinerary at the end states that "Regular train tickets will be cheaper than a Japan Rail Pass for this itinerary"; I take it that is implying for the 21-day railpass, so for the 14-day pass it makes sense right?

=================
Total
91,900-104,400 yen

7-day Japan Rail Pass
50,000 yen
pays off

14-day Japan Rail Pass
80,000 yen
pays off

21-day Japan Rail Pass
100,000 yen
close call

I think Tokyo - Takayama and Takayama- Kanazawa is best done by bus. So the JRP cannot pay off.

That itinerary has several sections that are non-JR (Mt Koya) and there are also sections that can be done substantially cheaper (Tokyo to Takayama via Matsumoto rather than Nagoya as an example). Plus, there are additional discounts if combining the base fare for longer sections (Osaka to Nagasaki) that would not get picked up by the calculator you used.
I would not bother with a pass for this schedule as regular tickets also provide some better train options.

I made a rough calculation based on the previous posts.

1. From Tokyo to Takayama: Bus, 5h 45min, 6000 yen.
2. From Takayama to Kanazawa via Shirakawa-go: Bus, 2600+2600 yen
3. From Kanazawa to Kyoto: Thunderbird express train, 7020 yen.
4. From Osaka to Hakata to Himeji to Osaka: JR West Sanyo-San'in pass 23000 yen
5. From Hakata to Nagasaki to Hakata: 6050+6050 yen
5. From Osaka to Tokyo: Shinkansen. 14720 yen. You can buy ticket for this leg and combine it to the JR west pass, so you don't need to get off at Shin-Osaka.

Total: 68040 yen.

I'm just going to throw out there, that while the calculator will give you train fares from Takayama to Toyama to Kanazawa, it doesn't tell you there are only 8 trains a day from Takayama to Toyama, 4 locals and 4 express trains. It can be very awkward because you need to leave at like 11:00 am or wait until like 1:45ish to leave because the only local between those two express trains arrives in Toyama about 20 minutes before the express does.

I am just throwing this out there because a lot of people don't realize that Takayama to Toyama is a PIA route.
