Where to stay Zao Ski and Ginzan Onsen

Hello Everyone!
We will arrive in Tokyo on January 1st, 2024 around 12 noon. We want to visit Zao Onsen Ski Resort and Ginzan Onsen (one day each). Would like to check which area should we stay at? Was thinking Yamagata or Sendai (will take Shinkansen train straight from Tokyo). If I'm not mistaken, staying in Yamagata will take less time to go to these places?
From Yamagata to Zao Onsen Ski Resort, I believe there is a direct bus. How about from Yamagata to Ginzan Onsen, what is the best way to go there?
Also, would like to check if trains/buses are open during our visit?
