What to do between Narai and Mt. Fuji

After hiking the Nakasendo, and eventually taking the train to Narai, I'm wondering if there are any suggestions, stops, places of note along the JR Chuo Line before I get to Otsuki?
Places worth stopping and staying overnight? Onsen? Ryokans of note?
It's practically 4 hours by train from Narai to Mt. Fuji and I don't want to waste all that time on a train.

From narai to otsuki st,you will see
Kiso hirasawa
Shiojiri
Kobuchizawa
Kofu
Yamanashishi
Enzan
Otsuki

The major sightseeing point would be Matsumoto. Not strictly speaking en route, but closeby.
