Yobikomi-kun

I recently got back from Japan looking through photos and videos I came across this wierd white figure playing quite a catchy tune in a MiniStop store in Asakusabashi.

I found out it is called Yobikomi-kun, but was not able to determine what the purpose of the figure was, where it origins and so.

I think I have heard it in some Donki-stores too. Please tell me more about this thing.

Produced in year 2000 as replacement for cassette tape recorder that were use to promote/introduce products in supermarket. With motion sensor and recording playback, also external mic.
