Check with your carrier, although I don't think it will work because in its specifications it says that it uses GSM and not 3G. There is no GSM network in Japan.

It does support 3G. I've got a K800i so I'll know for sure when I visit next month ^^

I read on a review that it didn't support 3G but it looks like that might just be for data streaming. And the sony page says that it does support 3G. In that case, Japan runs on a different 3G frequency than the rest of the world so hopefully it is compatible. Let us know when you get back if it worked or not.
And as always with this question, the best place to ask would be customer support of your phone carrier.

I had k800i with me this summer when I visited Japan. It worked just fine! had no problem.. even while in rural areas.. =)
