Hello. I am an American considering working in Japan. I have a serious, chronic health condition. It is under control, and I am able to work and live normally. However, I need to take very expensive medication and see specialists regularly. What kind of health insurance coverage can foreign workers obtain in Japan? Thank you.

There is also National Health Insurance. Here is an explanation aimed for residents of Minato Ward in Tokyo, but it's generally the same wherever you live in Japan. http://www.city.minato.tokyo.jp/e/living/li_10.html

If a mole is malignant melanoma, removal of the mole is covered by the national health insurance, but you still have to pay 30% of the rate. If you prefer remove your mole for your beauty, it is not covered. About the birthmark, whether it is covered by the insurance or not is depends on what types of birthmark you have, and what kind of operation you are going to have for your birthmark.
