Takayama in January - what to pack? 2007/9/26 18:49
What do I pack eg clothing, shoes? Will be visiting Takayama in early January. Can you tell me whether there will be snow during this time.

Our trip will be Tokyo and Kyoto and then to Hawaii (which will be a lot warmer).

Don't want to pack too much, if possible, but need to cover all weather conditions.

What are your suggestions?

What you pack for Hawaii would be opposite of what you pack for Takayama. Since its winter, even if there is no snow, you'll still want long sleaves, sweaters, jackets etc. For Hawaii I doubt you'll need those items. Unfortunately you might need to find yourself packing for two things instead of one thing fits all.

The Average Temperature in Hawaii for January is: Around 65-83 degrees F.

While Tokyo/Kyoto it is:
34-50 degrees F

Takayama winter 2007/9/27 06:22
I visited Takayama in late December of 2003, and early February of 2005...maybe it was just chance, but at both times there was lots of snow in Takayama. While the main route through town was relatively clear (clear/packed snow), the side streets were icy/packed with snow. Friends of mine went in early April this year and while there was no snow left on the ground, they had snow/sleet while there.
I haven't been to Kyoto during this time, but I have heard that it is very cold in winter.

So I would plan on cold weather. Have good warm safe walking shoes. If you have old gloves and hats you don't care about, take them along and then throw them away when you leave for Hawaii.

Are there any weather websites which show statistics for previous years in and around the Takayama area. eg snow or temperatures.

Would sportshoes (runners) be appropriate?
