Language in Okinawa

I was just curious about language barriers in Okinawa (prefecture, not just the island). My Japanese is upper elementary to beginner intermediate, but I am getting better. I know that on the Okinawan islands, other dialects are spoken. Will I have a hard time communicating or getting around with my limited "standard" Japanese language skills? I'll be visiting Okinawa, Miyako and the Yaeyama Islands.

I don't think you'll have a problem traveling in Okinawa. Yes, there's a dialect (mostly in words not in pronunciation) but they generally do speak standard Japanese, especially to tourists like you.
