Another silly question 2007/11/13 23:26
How do I write '' Can I get a hug?''

Thnx :)

Free hug 2007/11/14 09:36
Sadie,

It depends rather on who you are asking, but one way would be ...

"Dakko shite moraeru?"

PS:
It wasn't a silly question, but using a more descriptive title will help other people with the same question find it more easily when searching through the archives.

How do I write it in kanji ? 2007/11/14 20:03
Do you know how do I write it in kanji :)

Dakko 2007/11/14 20:15
Sadie,

It would be written as:
だっこしてもらえる?
I think using kanji for moraeru (貰える) would probably look odd here.

To Sadie and Dave in Saitama,

Sorry to jump in, but to me "hug" (in English) and "dakko" sound quite different... "dakko" sounds a bit like mom "holding" her small child/baby in her arms or really fully "embracing" as against "hugging"...

Once I (Japanese woman) was surprised to be asked by my friend, whom I don't get to see often, "hagu shite mo ii desu ka?" (May I give you a hug?) using the borrowed word "hagu" directly from English. That was the first time that I heard a Japanese person use the word "hagu" when speaking Japanese, and I don't know how common it is generally speaking, but "hagu" might sound more casual/friendly as against "dakko," which can sound a bit intimate/childish.

Thnx for responding :)
I don't want to ask "May I hug you?"
I want to ask "Can I get a hug?"
Is it the same thing in japanese?
Could you write it in kanji?

Thnx

Hugs all round 2007/11/15 08:10
AK,

Thanks for your comments. You may well be right. My impression was/is that "hagu" corresponded more to the western idea of hugging people you don't necessarily love, whereas "dakko" was something more intimate such as between a boyfriend/girlfriend or mother/child.

Ohhh, yes, I meant "a hug" as in western style, and I thought that was what Sadie wanted :)

Once again, to ask "Can I get a hu?" if you want to use the "intimate" one, it would be, as suggested by Dave in Saitama:
- Dakko shite moraeru? - informal speech
- Dakko shite moraemasu ka? - polite speech

If you want western "hug," I'd say:
- Hagu shite moraeru? - informal speech
- Hagu shite moraemasu ka? - polite speech

Kanji? 2007/11/15 21:18
Sadie,

As with the previous example, it wouldn't be normal to use kanji here.
It would most commonly be written as:
ハグしてもらえる?

Kanji? 2007/11/16 08:33
Sadie,

As I have said (three times now), you wouldn't normally use kanji here.
Get hold of a hiragana character chart to see for yourself how to write "moraemasuka" instead of "moraeru". It's not at all difficult, and it will be good practice for you rather than being continually spoon-fed here.
