... or 'Tengoku to Jigoku' in Japanese (1963), was adapted from a pulp novel - King's Ransom - by Ed McBain. Not sure if there was a film of that, although much later it became the basis for a Mel Gibson movie.
Kurosawa also did adaptations from Shakesepeare (Throne of Blood, Ran). And his Dodes'kaden is a blend of several stylisitc sources, incl Hollywood sound stage musicals.
The 1988 romantic mystery Kaito Ruby was adapted from a UK novel by one Henry Slesar. Again, I only know a book source, although stylistically it owes much to MGM musicals of the late 1950s.
And the Miyazaki animation Howl's Moving Catle was also based on a British (book) source.
