Withdrawal of water from water heater

Will be away from home (Niigata) for couple of weeks tomorrow and i was told i need to withdraw the water in the water heater to avoid damage due to the cold weather in winter here. But i've nv done this b4.
Can somebody out there please tell me how should i go about it. Urgent!

Is there an owner's manual? It would be better to ask your landlord how to do it. If it is not possible, ask your neighbors.
