go to japan alps via takayama

I am planning to visit Takayama around 2nd week of April. Is it possible to take a bus from Takayama to see Japan alps and come back in one day ? Appreciated if anyone can help

From Takayama, you can go to Hirayu Onsen(hot spring resort in the mountain) via a local bus and you can even take the ropeway(Shin-hodaka Ropeway)along the way. From Takayama to Hirayu Onsen only takes you one hour but the bus doesn't run very often, and it is nice to go slowly to enjoy the grand view of the mountains on the ropeway. I recommend you to buy a special 2-day freepass(5000yen) in Takayama to go to the onsen by bus and the ropeway.

It's possible but time consuming, a long way (3 hrs or so all together) about 1.30 hrs or so ride each way to Shin Hodaka (ir that's where you want to go) ropeway to see alps etc from Takayama-shi. though we've only been there with friends who drove us in a 4-runner and also took us to a natural gottenburo park where you leave your stuff in a locker and go for a dip.
should think about staying one night if you want to take time.

*According to my るるぶ book (Japanese tour book for Hida Takayama)shows a few different tours which some takes 6.30 hrs all available from Takayama bus center, Takayama Eki. Not sure if you're interested in a tour but a good way to go if it's your first time and want to get acclimated with the areas.

*This book also explains that the regular tansportation buses from Takayama to other areas are convenient to use, depending on seasons, they have bus departures 10~12 times per day to ShinHodaka from Takayama station. Other routes have different 便 each day.
