what to do in Kyoto/Tokyo?

I only have 5 days to spend in Tokyo and Kyoto in July and I was looking for any suggestions as to what is a "must see" in those areas. I have found so much information on the internet (and in lonely planet books) that i truly feel overwhelmed! Any suggestions would be appreciated.

5 days are not adequet to view the best of Japan's attractions. so this is my advice.

Plan A
Drop Kyoto and concentrate on the attractions in Greater Tokyo, especially if you're interested in Modern Japan.

Plan B
Drop Tokyo and concentrate on the attractions in Kansai Region, especially if you're interested in Historical Japan.

Plan C
Visit Tokyo and Kyoto only though 5 days is not adequet at all, if you never come to Japan again.
