Easy to find meeting point in Kyoto?

I don't know Kyoto at all. Is there an easy to find place in central Kyoto, that is a good place to arrange to meet a friend. Somewhere where Id know Id found the right place. Perhaps near Kyoto station?

inside the Kyoto station there is a giant staircase on the west side (to the right when coming in from the street, to the left when coming from the trains). One can seat on the steps as that area is used for shows etc.

I recommend meeting your friend at the lobby of a nearby hotel, for example, at Granvia or New Hankyu, as it is less crowded and unlikely to miss.
