Studying and working in japan

I plan to move to japan in about 3 years, and i was wondering what kind of visa would i apply for if i want to study in japan and work there as well. I know that i would probably apply for a student visa but can you make a living off of it? Also with the student visa don't you end up leaving sooner, then with a working visa? Or could i ask for a longer stay with the whole schooling thing? Any helpful informationg with for this would be great.
