Tax rates in Japan barely differ at all between the regions. Here is what to expect: http://www.japan-guide.com/e/e2206.htmlRent is low in Yamanashi because it is the countryside. Kofu with 200,000 inhabitants is Yamanashi's largest city. Where it is best to live depends on your personal preferences. If you like city life, I obviously recommend Kofu. For retirement years, I suggest a villa in the Fuji Five Lake area with views of Mount Fuji from the living room and bath.
