Visiting Takayama/Japan Alps in April?

Hi I am visiting Japan in the first two weeks of April and would love to visit the Alps and maybe enjoy some walking/hiking but on research think it is sounding like it is very cold and mostly unaccessible?? Would I be better off spending more time visiting kyoto, wakayema and maybe further south/west instead? Many Thanks Emma
