Richard,
On the Yamanote Line, uchimawari means anti-clockwise, and sotomawari means clockwise. These terms are used because the anti-clockwise track is on ths inside and the clockwise track is on the outside, but I have always wondered why these confusing terms are used instead of the more obvious clockwise and anti-clockwise terms.
