A nice way to stay in Furano is at a pension:

For something less personal, there are two Prince Hotels:

No. Public transportation around Furano and Biei is not convenient, at all.

Must i rent a car?

No, but it makes things much easier. I recommend it:

Thanks Uji. If I don't rent a car in furano/biei, what is the best way to move around? Do you have in mind a pension to recommend? By the way, we have a last day in Sapporo before flying home from Sapporo Chitose airport, do you know of any outlet malls nearby that we can spend the last day? Preferably not too far from airport as we taking morning flight. Thanks again.

Clover, Furano is a little 'rural' and a great place for a skiing holiday but keeping kids amused could be a tad difficult. If you have the Hokkaido pass I would consider staying in Asahikawa and doing the 70' commute to Furano by train.
