Japanese wedding arrangements

My fiance and I are very much interested in spending our first couple weeks as husband and wife in Japan. We would like to be there during the Cherry Blossom festivals (March-April) and would also love to spend time seeing the country side and historical sites. We are both healthy and somewhat adventurous, but neither of us have been to Japan before. Any regional suggestions or "places to steer clear of"? all help is greatly appreciated. Also, does any one know the legalities on being married in Japan? We are both U.S. citizens. Just starting to plan...
