What are the "musts"Here you go (see under Hokkaido and Tohoku): http://www.japan-guide.com/e/e623a.htmlHow long do we have to plan for? From three days to three months. It is entirely up to you! Is it possible to do it not as a backpackers, with trains?Certainly! Trains are used by people from all income groups and travel budgets in Japan. But a rental car is often the most convenient means of transportation in Hokkaido and rural regions: http://www.japan-guide.com/e/e2024.html
