I have not been to the Shirakawa-go area since I was 10 years old, and I'm almost 30.....but if I remember correctly, there are buses that take visitors to the different villages and you can walk around on foot.
If you stay the night in any of the villages, you are not going out or anything. You eat the delicious country style food that is prepared for you by the proprietors. Remember, this is very rural, so it's not like you will be stepping out to go to a club or anything.
It looks like you will be eating very fresh soba noodles. Mmmmm

You can't go there by walk.

What you mean by "city"? If you mean it " center of Shirakawa mura village", it's only 2~3 handreds meters.
But if you want to know from "takayama city" or "kanazawa city", you can't walk.
The map you attached is driving map and these white dots are inter-change. And the map says "2hours from Kanazawa through Hakusan super rindo(= woodland pass)" or "90 min from Takayama through route 158".

Yes. Kappo was more specific.
I was just trying to say that this is a very rural area. You will not be going anywhere in the evening where you will have to worry about walking to any sort of central area and walking back. so it's not an issue. This is not a city- but beautiful small towns not far from each other that retain a traditional farm house style of architecture.
Enjoy it. I have fond memories of it :)
