Anyone done a tour of Kyushu by hire car? We arrive Osaka in Sept. and are thinking if a hire car would be good down there? Would a JR train pass be better for 10 days visit,or maybe a combination of both? Recommended routes, sights and accom. would be great too. Love traditional Japan and not too much hard hiking.Thank you

Cities - trains; countryside - drive

You don't want to drive around Kita-Kyushu, Fukuoka, Nagasaki, or Kumamoto, unless you enjoy narrow lanes and lots of stop lights. However, the areas between are best reached by car and some places that's the only realistic option as buses are set up for commutes with reverse directions in the morning and evening.
