Self drive in Kyoto/Kumihama?

Is it faster/cheaper for family of 7 inc 2 kids as compared to public transport? We will be staying in Kumihama most of the time and most places of interest are in Central Kyoto. Undertand that JR Trains takes 3-4hrs from Kumihama!

I think self drive is cheaper if you can use a car large enough for 7pax.
For info train fare from Kumihama to Kyoto is oneway JYE4160 take express from Toyooka(child half).
