We're planning a 2 week visit to Japan and would like suggestions of best area to stay in tokyo and things to do for a couple of days - as well as any day trips from Toyko - and or Nagano as we also are planning to spend time skiing at Shiga Kogen -SO any suggestions about "Must Dos" at either end or inbetween would be hugely appreciated

1 hr direct JR from Nagano is Matsumoto with its magnificant castle. From Matsumoto, you can go to beautiful Kamikochi though the road to Kamikochi maybe close in winter due to heavy snow. Another side-trip from Matsumoto is Daio Wasabi Farm in Hotaka, the largest wasabi farm in Japan.

For onsen experience, go to Yudanaka or Kusatsu. Yudanaka is also base for visit to the Jigokudani Yaen Koen (monkey park)

On shinkansen line between Nagano and Tokyo is the popular resort town of Karuizawa with the big Prince Shopping Plaza shopping outlet. Karuizawa is also a good base for visit to Onioshidashi Rock Garden and Shiraito-no-taki waterfalls.
