I plan to ride the Reort Shirakami train from Hirosaki to Akita late October. Will it be crowded? Can I reserve seats now? If so, can I do it from US or do I have to be in Japan?

Mari,
It could be fairly popular at that time of year, although it is a bit late for the autumn colors.
However, you can only reserve seats from one month in advance, and only at stations in Japan - not online.
