How do I get from Kyoto to Mount Fuji?

I will be in Kyoto for two weeks in late October. When I was previously in Japan in 1976 the one thing I missed out on that I wanted to do was to go to Mount Fuji. Everything else we have planned for this trip is in the Kyoro area and I'm wondering how long it would take to go to Mount Fuji. What is the best way to travel? Which train? Should we plan to stay overnight? I am interested in actually going to the mountain, not just viewing it fro a distance. I've tried looking at hyperdia.com but I can't figure it out by myself.
