Is it a good time to visit Hokkaido from 26 Dec to 11 Jan. I understand Japan celebrates the new year and most places of interest will be closed. In addition, I plan to take the train from tokyo to hokkaido and wonder if it would very crowded since it is new year. So wonder if it is wiser to change the travel dates to avoid the crowd. Thanks.

Only for winter sports. The weather tends to be on the bad side.
I understand Japan celebrates the new year and most places of interest will be closed.
Ski resorts will operate as usual.
In addition, I plan to take the train from tokyo to hokkaido and wonder if it would very crowded since it is new year.
On certain days in the beginning of the holidays, it will be very crowded. In 2008, December 27 is expected to be particularly busy. But before December 27 should be okay, especially if you travel during the daytime.
