Pay phones in train stations

I'm going to Japan and wasn't planning on taking or renting a moblie phone. A number of ryokan have asked me to call them for pickup on arrival at a train station. Do most train stations have public payphones I could use for this purpose or should I consider buying a mobile in japan (I'm going for 26 days so rental could be very expensive). Thanks

Japan still has plenty of public phones and there should not be a problem finding one or more at a train station.
